Who is Sarah Aronson?

When Sarah Aronson was a kid, she was not an avid reader or even a particularly good student. For entertainment, she preferred sitcoms and soap operas to books. That changed when, at age 16, she moved to York, England, with her family. There she discovered Charles Dickens and Emily Bronte.

Now she reads every day.

Some of her favorite Y/A authors include Robert Cormier, Walter Dean Myers, Nancy Werlin, M. T. Anderson, Tim Wynne Jones, E. R. Frank, Tanya Lee Stone, and Gail Giles.

She has also become a better student. Sarah holds a BA from Rutgers College, an MSPT from Arcadia College, and an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College, earned in July 2006. Her thesis was titled: Lights! Camera! Action! Cinematic Technique in Novel Writing. She has lectured at the New England SCBWI conference and helps run an annual novel writing retreat each spring.

Other interests include theater, film, music of all genres, coffee, chocolate, bike riding and hiking. Most memorable concerts: The Sex Pistols in the late seventies, Elvis Costello and Squeeze in the eighties, and Bruce Springsteen, any time, anywhere. She makes a very hot and spicy seafood soup and collects electric menorahs, the kitschier the better. She has worked as an aerobics instructor, physical therapist for people with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, and religious school principal. She is currently a senior sales associate for Jewish Lights and SkyLight Paths Publishing.

Sarah lives in Hanover, NH, with her family.

Sarah Aronson writes,

“When I was in physical therapy school, we were asked to spend some time in a wheelchair. We had to maneuver up ramps, into bathrooms, and through crowded halls. It was almost impossible. Luckily, when we were tired, we could simply stand up. We could walk away. We were just fooling around.

I have always admired the sheer will of people following a traumatic injury. As a physical therapist, I worked with many people to overcome obstacles and return to society. But I rarely saw them after discharge. I often wondered what life was like outside the rehab unit. That said, I never set out to show people what it was like to sustain a spinal cord injury.

I wanted to explore a character who felt trapped and labeled, a character that needed to rise above society’s judgments, forgive himself, and move beyond his mistakes.

Sarah's first novel, Head Case, will be published by Roaring Brook Press in September 2007.

About Head Case: One mistake. One bad night. One too many drinks. A powerful and heartbreaking debut novel about a guy who had it all. . . until he drank that fifth beer and got into the car. Head Case will make you consider how we judge each other. And how we can move beyond our mistakes—with honesty, compassion, and even humor.
